Australia’s frailties against spin bowling came to the fore once again in the first test match against Pakistan at Dubai. Pakistan has settled well into playing in UAE as there have been no home matches for them in quite a while. The conditions in UAE suit them and they made the most of it in the first test match. Pakistan bowlers did well in the absence of their main spinner, Ajmal whose action is under scrutiny. Ajmal has played a key role for Pakistan in test matches especially those played in Dubai. So, a good overall performance from the Pakistan team saw them pick up a comfortable victory in the first match of the two-match test series.
Australian batsmen did not apply themselves too well other than a few exceptions. David Warner was the standout batsman for the visitors as he scored a fluent century against some top class bowling. Steve Smith also got off to a good start but gave it away which hampered the team’s chances of making a big score. Clarke is coming back from injury and is not looking at his best. He has a lot of experience playing in the sub-continent and is perhaps the best player of spin in the Australian team currently. Hence, he is the key batsman for Australia in UAE.
Younis Khan may be out of favor in the limited overs team but that has not affected his Test match performance by any means. He played the anchor role to guide Pakistan to a big total with a century in the first innings. He followed it up with another century in the second innings to put Pakistan in the driver’s seat. His contribution was immense in helping Pakistan win the first test match quite easily in the end.
Rogers and Warner gave Australia a good start in both the innings but the rest of the batsmen have failed to make the most of it. Australia cannot hope to win in the second test match if they are not able to handle spin. This may not be possible suddenly as they have to go back to the drawing board and sort out the issues. The conditions at Abu Dhabi may favor the seamers a little more but spin will come into play as well. Australia seamers will have to do some quick damage before the pitch starts to offer some turn. The fragile batting of Australia makes Pakistan the favorites in the second test match as well.
