Recap of week 4 in the IPL 7

Royal Challengers Bangalore had a horrifying week in which they played three matches and could not get a win in any of them. To add to their woes, they lost two of their matches at home at the Chinnaswamy stadium which has been a happy hunting ground for them in the past. All the losses can be credited to the lackluster bowlers of Bangalore. Other than Mitchell Starc and Chahal, none of the bowlers seem to have the confidence to deliver match winning spells. This has spelled doom for the Bangalore based franchise on several occasions in this year’s IPL. Things are not looking great as they will play some do or die matches in the near future.

Mumbai Indians started to regain some form after winning at home against Punjab and then Bangalore, but failed to put one over the rampaging Chennai Super Kings. They started off well in the batting but faltered towards the end against some disciplined bowling. Once again, Pollard came in quite late and could only manage a golden duck when his team needed some big shots from the lad from Trinidad & Tobago. The batting order still continues to be a bit of a confusion since Corey Anderson and Pollard are not getting enough overs to play. Simmons has been brought in as a replacement along with Kumar to add some strength to the side.

Chennai continued their good run against Mumbai and Delhi but faltered against Punjab for the second time in the tournament. Punjab remains the only team to have beaten the Chennai Super Kings this season. Chennai lost the services of Dwayne Bravo due to injury but they have found an able replacement in the form of David Hussey. Just until the other day, Hussey was in the commentator’s box and now finds himself in one of the best teams in the tournament. Both the Hussey brothers might get a game in the latter part of the tournament.

Punjab has been very consistent and is holding on to the top spot on account of run rate. They are tied on the same number of points with second placed Chennai Super Kings. Punjab comprehensively beat Chennai and Bangalore but suffered a shock defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders. Sehwag regained some of his form which is good news for the Punjab team. But, the failure of Maxwell and Miller was the main reason for their loss. Other teams will take notice of this fact and will look to target these players. Punjab should not get complacent and rely too heavily on just a couple of players if they want to win the tournament. They are just a couple of wins away from qualifying to the next round.

After beating KKR in the super over in the previous game, Rajasthan managed to secure a comfortable win this time around. Steve Smith and James Faulkner performed a rescue act and pulled off a miracle win for their team against Bangalore at the Chinnaswamy stadium. A match that was dominated by Bangalore for 35 overs was turned by some brilliant hitting by these two players. Rajasthan could have been tied with Chennai and Punjab for points but they were handed a loss by Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Hyderabad bowlers have done pretty well so far and are on the verge of making it to the top four. They are placed in fifth position below Kolkata but are one of the frontrunners for the fourth spot in the table. David Warner and Aaron Finch will be the key to the Sunrisers campaign since Shikhar Dhawan is not in great form.
