Another exciting week of the IPL and there have been some close matches as we have seen over the past years in this tournament. The most recent match between Bangalore and Hyderabad was one of the most exciting matches to be played in this year’s IPL. AB De Villiers has regained top form which is a great sign for Bangalore who have some home matches lined up. Bangalore had just dipped a little after a positive start in the tournament. With three losses and two wins they were just started to worry a little but will be uplifted by the performance of AB De Villiers in the last match. With Chris Gayle too showing some form, it will be difficult to stop RCB now that the tournament has come back to India.
Sunrisers Hyderabad has sunk further as they lost a close match due to the genius of De Villiers. With four losses out of six matches, they are in the same boat as Delhi Daredevils. These two teams will find it very difficult as they do not have the best bowlers at their disposal. They need to strike some form quickly to get out of sixth and seventh spots respectively. Sunrisers bowling resources have depleted further due to the injury to Nathan Coulter-Nile. He played extremely well for Mumbai Indians in last year’s Champions League T20. Unfortunately, he has been ruled out of the season so Hyderabad will have to find a good replacement.
Kolkata lost two matches in the week and hence are in no better position than Hyderabad and Delhi. They have also won two out of six matches so far. They have been a bit unfortunate as they lost in the super over against Rajasthan Royals on account of most boundaries hit. The scores were tied after the main match as well as the super over. Losing such a close match can really bring down the morale. The big players have like Gambhir and Pathan have not been in form which is really hurting the side at the moment. Sunil Narine has been in exceptional form as always and is the top performer for KKR this year as well. Kallis, Gambhir and company have to show some responsibility if they want the team to do better this year and get in the top four.
Rajasthan has gained momentum from their victory over KKR in the super over and they are steadily becoming one of the strong contenders to finish in the top four again this year. They followed it up with an easy win against Delhi in Delhi. Rajasthan won all their matches at home last year but did not do to well while playing away. With their home matches scheduled for Ahmadabad this year, an away will act as a relief and confidence booster as they may not win all their home matches this time around. RR seems poised to make the play-offs as they are looking strong in the third position at the moment.
Punjab ended the UAE leg on a high with five out of five wins while Mumbai Indians were just the opposite having lost five out of five. Mumbai played their first home game against the table toppers Kings XI Punjab. Punjab was high on confidence but a stellar innings from Pollard saw Mumbai get through and inflict a loss on Punjab which no other team had done before. Mumbai have two more home games and they can still make the play-offs if they build some momentum with two wins at home. Punjab is tied on points with Chennai Super Kings and just needs to win a couple of matches more to ensure a place in the play-offs which looks quite likely.
