Things are not looking up for Zimbabwe with their second consecutive loss against visitors South Africa. Things could have been different if the batsmen would have stepped up but nothing positive has been seen after the Test match between the two sides. Losing the first ODI by a big margin was not expected and Zimbabwe bowlers came up with a good performance to restrict the South African batsmen to just over 250. However, Zimbabwe batsmen faltered yet again and even failed to reach a score of 200 in the process. Such poor batting performances could well lead to a whitewash for the home team.
F du Plessis is making most of his chances and putting up consistent performances as he will look forward to being an important member of the squad for the upcoming world cup. De Kock and Amla are forming a potent opening partnership which is allowing the South African batsmen to put up formidable totals on the board. Zimbabwe needs to break the opening partnership early in the third ODI to have a good chance of restricting South Africa to a below par total. Another good partnership at the top will certainly mean another loss for Zimbabwe.
Brendan showed his class in the lone Test match but has failed so far to help his team chase down big totals. He is the best batsmen in Zimbabwe at the moment and needs to deliver for his team. A big innings from him is due which is the best chance for a Zimbabwe win. The problem for Zimbabwe is that one or two batsmen are able to perform in a match while the rest have not played supporting roles. Playing around Brendan Taylor will be advantageous for Zimbabwe in the third match. A big total should put pressure on the South African batsmen who are known to crumble under pressure.
The bowling from both sides has been good in general but Zimbabwe has lacked a bit of discipline. They gave away too many extras in the first match and the trend continued in the second match as well. Zimbabwe bowlers have bowled a total of 23 wides in the space of just two matches. They can ill afford to give away easy runs against a good batting line up. The odds are again in favor of South Africa but Zimbabwe will surely put up a much better fight in this match.
